Really really taken by these painted works by Kevin Umana. It has a sense of modernism and Matisse to the work but I really like the contemporary and graphic feel to the compositions as well. I think the colour, shape and pattern are the most important elements to the work. It feels very ambiguous but sits well with me as the shapes are so bold and have a nostalgic tone too. This is really great inspiration for making my Secret 12" pieces as I've been a bit stuck. This has given me the confidence to just work with simple shapes and colours through painting as opposed to adding screen print or digital tools in to the production.

Creative Report: initial thoughts
Initial thoughts of people/ places to contact:
I feel like the people I'm most interested to get in contact with are Laura Slater and Atelier Bingo as they create work that can be applied to products such as textiles, zine pieces and prints. I feel like these contexts are where I see my future practice heading. I also feel that talking to Laura Slater will be a great help as she is a stand in lecturer for the printed textile course here at the college of art and understands where I stand as a student.

Creative Presence: Alfie Kungu
These large scale paintings are created by Alfie Kungu and are part of an exhibition series called Legs 11. I'm just so excited by all the colours and textures created by the paintings but mainly by the scale of the work, I love the fact that they fill a room and are displayed as an exhibition. I sometimes feel like creating work on paper through print or just in sketchbooks can be quite limiting and doesn't necessarily capture an audience completely. I would really love to explore the idea of exhibition pieces for the applied illustration brief and possibly create smaller products that would be sold alongside this context rather than making products for products sake.
Creative Presence: Nicolas Valencia
This illustration really struck a chord with me. I absolutely love the heart melting/ endearing narrative behind this piece even thought it's a stand alone illustration. I think the use of colour, texture, pattern and shape has a massive impact on it's charm however the bulkiness and scale of the characters is the real key to this. I would really love to start implementing more character or figures into my work and this is something I've been developing in my studio practice blog. I think it could work really successfully in regards to my cop as I'm looking at the female form, however I think I should really try and home in on this narrative quality in the secret 7 brief as a song is essentially story telling. I feel really inspired.
